About Trenton, NJ
The city of Trenton is located in Mercer County, and is the state capital of New Jersey, although it directly borders the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Its motto is “Trenton Makes, The World Takes”.
English Quakers led by Mahlon Stacy first settled into this area known as the Falls of the Delaware in 1679, seeking religious freedom after facing persecution in England. Trenton was founded on June 3rd, 1719 and at first named “Trent-towne”, after William Trent, a well-known Scottish trader and merchant in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The Battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776 was an important turning point in the American Revolutionary War, as it was George Washington’s first military victory. Washington’s troops crossed the Delaware River north of Trenton the night before, and he successfully led them to capture ⅔ of the Hessian forces, boosting the Continental Army’s dwindling morale and inspiring enlistments.

Through the 19th Century, Trenton experienced growth from many Europeans traveling for work. A new government was adopted in 1837, will many laws that still remain in place today.
